When you or a loved one require medical attention, you expect doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals to perform their duties competently and to provide a certain level of care. Though most medical professionals work tirelessly to help patients under their care, instances of medical negligence and misconduct do happen. When medical professionals fail to meet the standard level of care expected of them, it is crucial that they are held accountable.
Theile McVey, personal injury attorney with the law firm Kassel McVey, Attorneys at Law, recently represented a client whose family member was a victim of medical malpractice.
In this case, the plaintiff’s mother was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of a pulmonary embolism. She was placed on the blood thinner Warfarin, the generic counterpart of Coumadin, and was given a 10mg dose on two occasions—double the dose that she should have been given.
Even after exhibiting signs and symptoms of bleeding, the 71-year-old woman’s bleeding condition was left untreated. The patient was then given a third dose of Warfarin. Despite signs of bleed, doctors failed to immediately order any reversal agents to counter the effects of the blood thinner medication.
The next morning at shift change, the new attending physician recognized the problem and ordered reversal agents and blood transfusions. Unfortunately, the action came too late. The plaintiff’s mother bled to death in the hospital.
Thanks to Theile, the case settled after discovery but before trial, for $1,500,000.
